Legal Report: Border Security
A new law (P.L. 112-93) will extend an existing border security program. Under the program, the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security identify equipment and technology that could also be used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to combat illicit trafficking across the U.S. borders with Mexico and with Canada. The bill specifically notes that information should be shared on how to detect and track ultralight aircraft.
Beyond Print: Border Security
A bill (H.R. 915) that is designed to improve security along the U.S. border with Mexico, has been approved by the House. Homeland Security Committee. The House of Representatives has not announced whether it will take up the measure. The bill would require that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) establish a border enforcement security task force that would facilitate collaboration among federal, state, local, tribal, and foreign law enforcement agencies. These groups would share information and launch coordinated crime reduction activities.
