*****Corporate Homeland Security Desk Reference. By Richard F. Cross, CPP; published by A.S. Pratt & Sons, 800/456-2340 (phone), www.aspratt.com (Web); 400-plus loose-leaf pages; $499.
Security manuals and desktop references are certainly not difficult to find—just peruse the ASIS Bookstore—but few publications are as comprehensive as Corporate Homeland Security Desk Reference. With 40 years of experience in international and private security, and as a former president of ASIS, author Richard Cross, CPP, is well qualified to share his knowledge.
Cross’s text meticulously covers the many topics of security and risk management in the corporate world including traditional physical security, white collar crime, computer and data security, preemployment screening, and protection of proprietary information. In each section, Cross instructs the reader on how to properly evaluate and test specific levels of security and then suggests a range of protection approaches. He also does an excellent job defining operational terms and explaining how his ideas relate to today’s security needs.
But as is often the case with comprehensive treatments, this book lacks depth. It doesn’t even include references, citations, or a bibliography.
In addition, the checklists, sample reports, and forms in the book are meager and unsophisticated. They would have little value beyond the most basic applications. Also, the book would benefit from regular updates (it comes in a three-ring binder, so updates must be part of the package), because some information has already gone out of date.
These defects aside, the book makes a good, sweeping resource for mid-level security professionals.
