Defining Moment

“I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today” was the catch phrase of Wimpy in the Popeye cartoons. Some software creators are willing to trust users with their computer program today if they’ll gladly pay them later.

These programs typically have “nag screens” that remind you that you haven’t paid. Some only function for a limited amount of time unless payment is sent. What is this category of almost-free software called?

Hint: Think of an important lesson that teaches children to give some of what they have to others.

Answer: Shareware.
