Data breach notification laws, passed in 43 states so far, do not reduce states’ rates of identity theft. That’s according to a new report by Carnegie Mellon researchers. The study, which did a state-by-state analysis of data supplied by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), did not find a statistically significant effect associated with the laws, which require companies to notify consumers after their identity is stolen.
