The study of body language is increasingly popular—and not just among security professionals—because in personal interaction, understanding what’s shown can be as or more important than understanding what’s said.
In The Unspoken Dialogue, author Robert R. Rail explains the fundamentals of body language in communication and how to use it. The short book is divided into three parts. Part One covers the basics of body language in a manner similar to other works about the subject. Parts Two and Three cover interactive dialogues using body language, manipulating dialogue, and special threat situations. Therein lies the book’s strength, as the reader is taught to apply the basic concepts of body language to real-life situations.
While the book is informative, readers would have benefitted from more depth and substance of practical subject matter, such as additional training scenarios. Further, Rail might have included an index and sources where the reader could get more information about the topic.
Most of the information in the book is already familiar to those in the protection field. It is primarily for the novice interviewer, interrogator, and negotiator; however, experienced professionals will also find it a useful resource or refresher.
