Chemical Detector

Appears in the issue.

ICx Technologies of Billerica, Massachusetts, has developed a chemical-agent detection system. ICx Agentase Disclosure Spray changes color when sprayed on surfaces contaminated with nerve agents. The enzyme-based spray pinpoints the exact location of agents on surfaces, so decontamination teams can accurately focus their operations. The spray’s active ingredients are stored as powders for extended shelf life; they are dissolved in water just before deployment using a two-chamber sprayer. The spray carries components devised to alert users when surfaces are too basic or too acidic for agent detection. It detects the presence of chemical warfare agents at sub-microgram levels within five minutes.
