The GUARDION from Smiths Detection of Danbury, Connecticut, is a next-generation chemical threat detector that combines high-speed, high-resolution gas chromatography (GC) and a toroidal ion trap mass spectrometer (MS) in a portable device. The unit can confirm the presence and identity of chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals in gases, vapors, liquids, and solids. Smiths partnered with Torion Technologies of American Fork, Utah, to miniaturize, ruggedize, and optimize the technology and software so that the device is easy to use. Lighter than comparable systems, it is the size of a small carry-on suitcase and has a start-up time of about five minutes. It can analyze up to 30 samples on a single battery charge.
