Trace detection

Appears in the issue.

Smiths Detection of Pine Brook, New Jersey, has introduced the SABRE 4000, a hand-held trace detector that can detect threats from explosives, chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, and narcotics. The unit can detect and identify more than 40 threat substances in approximately 15 seconds. The unit weighs about seven pounds (including the 4-hour battery) and features a 3.5-inch color TFT display. It can analyze trace particle or vapor samples, so the operator can decide which collection method to use. Another product from the company is the HazMatID, a portable chemical identifier that can distinguish among thousands of different materials, including powders, toxic industrial chemicals, and explosives. The operator places a small sample of the unknown substance on the sensor and a touchscreen program gives step-by-step directions for the complete analysis.
