Building Evacuations

Sherry Harowitz

The Hall of the States building, which has two interconnected eight-floor buildings, is just a stone's throw away from the U.S. Capitol Building. Security Management  Associate Editor Laura Spadanuta went there to talk with Security Director Anthony Meadows about how his facility plans for and handles evacuations for everything from protests and active shooters to earthquakes.

Property management, chief engineering, and security department representatives meet to assess risks in each case, says Meadows. A mass notification system makes it possible to let tenants know what they need to do in an emergency. The system can also be used to alert workers to problems like street closings.

Meadows discusses this and other issues in a short video interview available in this month's digital edition.
