A Pennsylvania man was arrested last week on charges of hacking into computer systems belonging to organizations including the Department of Energy (DOE).

Andrew Miller, 23, of Devon, PA, was charged with one count of conspiracy, two counts of computer fraud, and one count of access device fraud, according to a statement [1]  released by the Department of Justice.

Miller, along with co-conspirators, hacked into computer networks between 2008 and 2011, according to a grand jury indictment. Aside from the DOE, other organizations that were hacked included RNK Telecommunications Inc., a Massachusetts company; Crispin Porter and Bogusky, a Colorado advertising agency; and the University of Massachusetts.

The hackers obtained users’ access credentials from the compromised computers, according to the indictment. They then tried to sell access to the networks along with other access credentials.

If convicted, Miller faces up to five years in prison for the conspiracy count and one of the fraud counts. He also faces up to 10 years in prison on another computer fraud count and the access device fraud count, followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
