The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has announced that the agency recovered a record amount of money for victims of discrimination in fiscal year 2012. The EEOC released the numbers as part of its first Performance and Accountability Report [1]. (The report will be released annually going forward as part of the EEOC’s new strategic plan.)

The report notes that the EEOC obtained $365.4 million in private sector administrative enforcement, which includes mediation, settlements, and benefits.

The number is an all-time record for the EEOC. Of the total figure, about 10 percent involved investigations of systemic charges of discrimination. This was four times the amount the agency obtained in systemic charges in fiscal year 2011.

The EEOC also announced progress in reducing its inventory of pending cases. In 2012, the agency received a total of 111,139 cases and, by the end of the year, had 70,312 unresolved cases. The number represents a 20 percent decline in unresolved cases.

The report also provides information on the agency’s education and outreach program as well as its federal sector programs.
