A new non-lethal ammunition. Drone pilots get promoted less than their traditional counterparts. Prosecutors to present evidence against the Aurora shooter. And more.

►An Idaho-based ammunition company is marketing ammunition it says is designed to avoid causing fatal injuries [1]. Integrity Ballistics LLC came up with the idea while trying to develop special ammunition for air marshals that wouldn’t pierce the skin of a plane. The company began marketing the product this month. Instead of penetrating, the round flattens on impact, stunning and bruising the target. The company is marketing the product toward law enforcement and bounty hunters.

►Congress wants to know why drone pilots don’t get promotions and school selections at the same rate [2] as traditional pilots. The Air Force Times has previously reported that UAV pilots [3] are less likely to advance than other pilots according to promotion data. “The Defense Authorization Act for 2013 requires the Air Force to explain the disparity and come up with solutions within six months of Jan. 2, when President Obama signed the law,” the Air Force Times reports.

►Prosecutors this week will present their case against James Holmes [4], the man who opened fire in a crowded theater in Aurora, Colorado, six months ago. Twelve people were killed and 70 were injured in the shooting. New facts about the case [5] should emerge, as the hearing will be the first public disclosure of the prosecution’s evidence against Holmes. “Three days after the shooting, District Judge William Sylvester forbade attorneys and investigators from discussing the case publicly, and many court documents have been filed under seal,” the Associated Press reports.

►In other news, workers' protests turned violent in India after two workers died from a gas leak at a lead plant [6]. The cause of the leak is under investigation. ♦ President Barack Obama will nominate Chuck Hagel as the next defense secretary and John Brennan to lead the CIA [7], the AP reports. ♦ And Microsoft’s most recent Internet Explorer patch [8] still left the program vulnerable hacking.
