10 more firms on list for closure, some of them Western-based.
The row about private security companies and its contractors has now come to Afghanistan, according to the Associated Press .
Two private Afghan security companies were raided and shut down this week, and a dozen or so more contractors — including some protecting embassies — would be closed soon, police and Western officials told The Associated Press on Thursday.
The government is proposing new rules to tighten control over such firms, including some Western companies, amid concerns they intimidate Afghans, show disrespect to local security forces and don't cooperate with authorities, according to a draft policy document obtained by the AP.
The article notes this could cause more problems for the U.S. military which employs approximately 1,000 security contractors in Afghanistan.
Police General Ali Shah Paktiawal said that some of the 59 private security companies or PSCs that registered with the government have been implicated in serious crimes such as murder and robbery.
The AP reports the draft rules they obtained said the regulation and monitoring of PSCs is "a matter of urgency" as the country confronts a resurgent Taliban movement.
