The intelligence community discloses one of its most tightly guarded secrets.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has released the budget numbers for the U.S. intelligence activities for this year.

According to the press release [1], the total allocated to the National Intelligence Program (NIP) for fiscal year 2007 was $43.5 billion.

No other disclosures, such as allocations for specific intelligence activities or programs, will be made, said the press release, because any further disclosure could harm national security.

Historically a highly guarded secret, the release of the national intelligence budget was a section of the 9-11 Commission Act of 2007 [2], signed into law earlier this year by President Bush.
