New fiber-optic intrusion detection systems from the Fiber Patrol division of Optellios of Langhorne, Pennsylvania, incorporate the ViconNet Digital Video Management System made by Vicon Industries, Inc., of Hauppauge, New York. Using a fiber optic cable sensor, the system reports the location of physical disturbances occurring anywhere along the lengths of the sensor, usually attached to a fence or buried underground. Adding the video system creates an active surveillance system that reacts to an alarm situation. When an intruder attempts to gain access, an alarm condition is triggered that alerts security personnel and indicates where the incident took place. A camera focuses on the point of the intrusion and records the scene, allowing personnel to immediately verify if an alarm condition represents a real threat. Sites can be monitored via an Internet connection.
