A law passed by the Oklahoma State House yesterday allows people with training to carry concealed weapons on college campuses.

The Oklahoma state House yesterday passed a bill that allows individuals with specialized firearms training to carry concealed weapons on the state's college campuses, the Associated Press reports [1].

The measure, which was appoved 65-36, "would authorize active-duty military and National Guard and reserve personnel, honorably discharged veterans and others with firearms training certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education who hold a state concealed weapons license to carry guns on college and university campuses."

Supporters of the law say that an individual with a concealed weapon might be the only one who can help if there is another campus shooter situation, because the police take minutes to respond.  However, the law does have many detractors:

"This has to be the craziest thing I have ever seen," said Rep. Ray McCarter, D-Marlow, one of several lawmakers who said the measure is opposed by college administrators.

The law also lowered the age of those military personnel and veterans who could be licensed to carry a concealed weapon to 18 from 21.

The bill will now be sent to the state Senate for a vote.
