The RAVEN is a new vehicle-arresting system from Engineered Arresting Systems Corporation of Aston, Pennsylvania. It resembles a large net that—when deployed either manually or automatically via a speed sensor—springs from the ground to immediately catch, cradle, and arrest an oncoming vehicle while bringing it to a controlled stop. It can be used to safely stop any category of vehicle up to and including a 15,000-pound truck traveling up to 50 miles per hour. Unlike other similar devices, it will cause only minimal damage to the vehicle or injury to the passengers. Because it is installed below ground, it does not impede routine traffic or detract from the aesthetics of the surrounding area. Aside from its use in perimeter protection, the system can be used for temporary diversion of traffic and for providing stopgaps in hazardous zones, such as steep grades on highways.
