E-Verify, a controversial program under which federal contractors and subcontractors would be required to electronically verify their employees’ eligibility to legally work in the United States, has again been delayed at the behest of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, according to a release from that organization.


E-Verify [1], a controversial program under which federal contractors and subcontractors would be required to electronically verify their employees’ eligibility to legally work in the United States, has again been delayed at the behest of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, according to a release  [2]from that organization.


Businesses have opposed the program as costly and ineffective. This is the second delay. The new deadline is May 21, 2009.


The Chamber of Commerce has also filed a lawsuit  [3]opposing the program.


The program is also opposed by privacy advocates,  such as the group known as EPIC, which details its opposition in a whilte paper on surveillance concerns and the E-Verify system [4].
