SARGENT Manufacturing of New Haven, Connecticut, has created a multisensory, intuitive guide to safety in its Beacon exit device. It features a built-in laser, strobe light, audible message, and electroluminescent lamp working together to lead building occupants towards emergency exits. The device connects to a building’s alarm system. When activated, it emits a pulse of light and white noise, followed by messages in English, Spanish, and French that tell people to “exit building here.” A laser is then beamed from the exit device, providing a path to the illuminated exit device touchbar. The technologies used in this product are visible in smoke and other low-visibility conditions. Beacon is part of the ASSA ABLOY family of LiteGuide products, which address building codes that seek to increase visibility of emergency exits.
