Several states passed laws to make it illegal for information brokers to obtain information by pretending to be the consumer or someone else with legal access to the data—a practice known as pretexting. Laws in Florida [1], Georgia [2], Oklahoma [2], and Maryland [3] would make pretexting to obtain telephone records illegal. A new statute in Utah [4] would make pretexting illegal pertaining to any sensitive personal-identifying information.
