The number of complaints about Internet crime rose 33 percent in 2008 compared to 2007, with financial losses rising about 11 percent, according to a new report [1].

The number of complaints about Internet crime rose 33 percent in 2008 compared to 2007, with financial losses rising about 11 percent. That’s according to a new report by the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. IC3 received about 275,000 crime complaints last year, up from about 207,000 in 2007.

Reported dollar losses were $265 million, up from $239 million in 2007. Complaints ranged from auction fraud to credit fraud to computer intrusions to spam. The report said about 73,000 complaints were referred to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies for follow up.
