Estimates on the size of the underground cybercrime economy may be inflated, according to a recent Microsoft report. In conducting studies, many vendors base their estimates largely on the dollar value of goods, such as credit card and Social Security numbers, listed for sale in cybercrime marketplaces, according to Microsoft. But many market participants are scammers who fail to deliver on goods and payments, says the study.
