The United States on Friday took another step toward protecting the country from cyberattacks by consolidating its cyberdefense efforts into one state-of-the-art cybersecurity center, reports [1] Computer Weekly.

The opening of the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) [2] marked the culmination of National Cybersecurity Awareness month in the US [3].

The NCCIC is aimed at improving US national efforts to respond to threats and incidents affecting critical information technology and communications infrastructure.

US Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano said the NCCIC will serve as the "central repository" for the cyber protection efforts of the civilian side of the federal government and its private sector partners.

The center, located in Arlington, Virginia, cost $9 million and will operate 24 hours, 7 days a week, reports [4]The Money Times. The move places the public-private United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team and National Coordinating Center for Telecommunications under one roof.

Despite the opening of the NCCIC, Computer Weekly notes that President Obama has still not appointed a cybersecurity advisor or determined one government agency responsible for the nation's cybersecurity.

President Obama said after taking office that cybersecurity was one of his administration's top priorities.
