Amsterdam-based Gemalto has earned FIPS 140-2 level 3 certification for its Smart Guardian FIPS encrypted USB drive with personal identity verification (PIV) integrated authentication ability. The secure storage device is a smart card-protected flash drive that meets the U.S. military 810-F environmental standard and is now available to secure the mobile data of U.S. government employees. The device provides data-at-rest protection for all information on the device without impacting user productivity, and the PIV integration offers the convenience of having to remember only one PIN. Agencies can strongly bind the SG FIPS to their employees’ government-issued PIV credential so only the authorized user can access the data. Tampering attempts will result in destruction of the smart card crypto module rendering it useless to intruders. Manufactured in the United States, the rugged, waterproof unit operates on multiple operating systems including Windows and Mac OS.
