HID Global of Irvine, California, has introduced the OMNI­KEY 5321 CR USB Reader, a waterproof, contactless PC-linked smart card reader that provides logical access in hygienic environments, such as manufacturing sites, hospitals, and clean rooms. The reader meets the strong data security requirements for healthcare facilities, such as those imposed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). It supports HID iCLASS and MIFARE credentials, as well as three ISO standards for contactless cards. It reads and writes to 13.56 MHz contactless smart cards and economically supports environments where multiple types of cards are used. The reader enables organizations to use the same smart card for both physical and logical access.
