London-based Bloxx has launched the Bloxx Media Filter, a secure Web appliance that enables schools and students to gain the educational benefits of online social media content, such as YouTube, in a secure online environment. The filter lets teachers identify curriculum-related video clips, which they can assign to a subject area and age range. Once approved, students can search and view clips streamed directly from YouTube through the appliance to classroom PCs without related videos, advertising, or user comments. Because only approved clips can be viewed, students do not risk viewing inappropriate material or comments. Available in hardware configurations to support different network sizes, it includes the appliance, software, software updates, and support for one or three years.
