FBI Employees Cheated on Security Test

A new report by the FBI's inspector general finds that numerous FBI agents and supervisors cheated on a terrorism exam.


A new report  [1]out from the FBI's inspector general found that 22 FBI employees either improperly used answer sheets or consulted with others during an exam on terrorism, criminal investigation, and intelligence-collection guidelines.




Answer sheets were distributed in multiple offices where employees were taking the exam, according to the inspector general. Additionally, some employees admitted consulting with each other or helping others with answers.


The report states that nearly all of those individuals who cheated falsely certified that they had not received assistance.  It recommends that the FBI investigate whether additional individuals cheated, pursue disciplinary action against the cheaters, and provide a new examination, even for those who were not accused of cheating. The exam was an effort to confirm familiarity with the Domestic Investigations and Operations Guide, which was released in 2008.


FBI Director Robert Mueller has responded to the cheating findings in a statement.  According to Reuters [2], he said:  "In cases where misconduct has been determined, personnel actions were taken, and that process continues. We will follow-up in each of the 22 cases the (inspector general) has found for disciplinary action, as appropriate, as well as any other allegations of misconduct."


At least one of the supervisors in the FBI field office who allegedly cheated has left the FBI, according to Reuters.




 


This is not the only damaging report regarding FBI employees.  "On September 20," Reuters also reported, "the inspector general said the FBI improperly launched investigations of U.S. activists after the September 11 attacks, miscast peaceful protests as acts of terrorism and in one case prompted FBI Director Robert Mueller to provide inaccurate testimony to Congress." 




And just five days before this, things got even more bizarre as three FBI agents and an FBI counterterrorism expert were arrested for lying about steroid and human growth hormone use, according to ABC News [3].
