The number, in thousands, of laptops missing or stolen in the past year from 329 organizations polled by the Ponemon Institute and Intel Corporation. Forty-six percent of the devices contained confidential organizational data, but a majority of devices did not contain either encryption or theft- prevention technology. Workers have a 5 to 10 percent chance of losing a laptop or having it stolen over a three-year period, depending on which industry they worked in, according to The Billion Dollar Lost-Laptop Study.
