Giesecke & Devrient GmbH of Munich, Germany, has developed a new card-body material that offers high tensile strength enabling thinner, more flexible data pages to be created. PECSEC is especially useful in passport production, where the data page has a chip embedded in it. Personal data such as name and a photograph can be engraved on the material using a laser for extra security. The durable material lasts at least 10 years. The film structure is 760 micrometers thick, which compares favorably with the 800- to 860-micrometer thickness of polycarbonate.
