The number of violent crimes is down for 2011, according to the FBI.

Preliminary data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report shows that for the first six months of 2011, violent crimes were down 6.4 percent [1]. Property crimes fell 3.7 percent. Crimes including murder, rape, robbery, and arson were down 5.7, 5.1, 8.6, and 7.7 percent, respectively.

"Cities with populations of 50,000 to 99,999 inhabitants recorded the largest decrease in violent crime at 7.2 percent," said an FBI press release. The largest decrease in violent crimes (9.7 percent) was in the Midwest.

The full-year's results will be released next summer and a final reported, titled “Crime in the United States in 2011,” will be released next fall.

The full results of the preliminary report [2] can be viewed on the FBI Web site.
