On the January 20, 2003, between the hours of 5:30 and 6:00 p.m., an armed private security officer (S/O) noticed a man shoplift some food items from the “Kash ‘n Karry” food store he was guarding in the Tampa, Florida, area. As the man left the store, the S/O pursued him and the suspect broke into a run. Blocks into the pursuit a strange thing occurred, the S/O accepted a ride from an unnamed motorist who wanted to participate in the chase. Coming upon the suspected shoplifter again, the S/O vacated the vehicle and confronted the suspected shoplifter.

Mystery Players: How Casinos Catch the Careless, the Cheats, and the Corrupt

I tried not to act surprised, but there it was happening smack dab in front of me: two cheaters at a blackjack table. Every few hands, when a pit supervisor was out of range, one would distract the dealer so that his accomplice could “cap” or “pinch” a bet.

The e-mail encourages recipients to fill out a survey, which erroneously states a fast food restaurant sponsored, and make a quick $90.

► The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has issued procedures for testing information technology systems used for storing and processing electronic health records. The set of 45 test procedures are designed to ensure that electronic health records work across systems developed by different vendors. The procedures evaluate issues such as the level of encryption and whether access is limited to authorized users only.

Colombia: Killers Post Two Hit Lists on Facebook; Three Teenagers Murdered

Facebook can be used for many things: reconnecting with old friends, organizing parties, selling goods, even radicalizing potential jihadi recruits. But this fiendishly innovative use for the site may be the most shocking. In the southwestern Colombian town of Puerto Asis, unknown killers last week posted a hit list of 69 names with a warning: get out of town within 3 days or die.
